Ultra Violet is Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year

Ultra Violet 18-3838 has been named Pantone’s 2018 color of the year.

The color was chosen for its ability to communicate originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points towards the future. Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.

Musical icons like David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince have used Ultra Violet to express their individuality (i.e. “Purple Rain.”) It puts a unique mark on the world and pushes creative outlets. Historically, the color has been associated with spiritual qualities like purple lighting in mediation and other gathering places.

Executive director of Pantone Leatrice Eiseman said, “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

Pantone, the world’s leading color matching system, has elected a color of the year since 2000. Representatives from all over the world meet twice a year to debate and choose a color for the following year. The results are published in Pantone View, which designers use as guidance for planning future projects.

“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design,” said Pantone vice president Laurie Pressman, “it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”

The Pantone Color Institute is recognized around the world as a leading source of color information through seasonal trend forecasts, custom color development, and palette recommendations for product and corporate identity. It partners with global brands to leverage the power, psychology, and emotion of color in design strategy.
